Indulge in an immersive tequila tasting class that celebrates the rich heritage of West Mexican culture, perfectly complementing the art on view in the new Mexican and South & Central American art galleries.
Explore the artistry and tradition behind four distinctive tequila varieties: Silver, Añejo, Reposado, and Mezcal. Guided by Rob Dutton, a WSET Agave Master Certification recipient, and Sheral Schowe, founder and owner of Wasatch Academy of Wine, LLC, you’ll uncover the unique flavors and stories that trace their roots to ancient west Mexican practices, offering a deeper connection to the exhibit's cultural narrative. Luke Kelly, associate curator of collections at the UMFA, will offer an enlightening presentation tracing the evolution of agave through ancient Mexican art on view at the Museum. Then, with newfound knowledge, you’ll venture into the galleries and experience the art for yourself.
This flavorful journey promises to be a feast for the senses and an enriching extension of the museum experience. The tequila tasting will be paired with gourmet refreshments provided by Cuisine Unlimited will accompany the wine tasting. This exclusive educational evening will surely be an eye—and palate—opening experience!

Meet the Presenters:
Luke Kelly
Luke Kelly is the associate curator of collections at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. In his 24th year at the museum, he oversees the archaeological and Asian collections. Working with the Artes de Mexico in Utah, he was lead curator for the new installation of the Mexican and Central and South American galleries.
Rob Dutton
Rob Dutton has been in the hospitality industry 25 years, and in 2015, he immersed himself in agave culture, literally. He lived in Oaxaca for a month and became a government-certified Master Mezcalier. From there, he earned his Award T in tequila and recently became one of the first WSET Agave Master Certification recipients. He combines education, passion, and leadership, not just to pour better drinks but to build better teams.
Sheral Schowe
Sheral Schowe is the founder and owner of Wasatch Academy of Wine, Utah's first and largest wine school. She is the affiliate provider of post-nominal certification courses on the wines of France, Italy and Spain for the Wine Scholar Guild and Adjunct Professor of Wine Studies for the Culinary Institute of Salt Lake Community College. She has a master’s degree in Adult Education and is a Licensed Wine Educator through the Utah Department of Alcohol Beverage Control. Sheral is a certified French and Spanish Wine Scholar with master’s level certification in the areas of Provence and the Rhine.
